The moment everyone has been waiting for is finally here. Samsung has announced the launch of its latest flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone in New York today. Just like the previous flagship phones from Samsung, it sets the bar high for its competitors in terms of hardware and features. In this article, we'll be looking at the key features of the phone.
Design:
The Samsung Galaxy S4 has the dimensions of 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and weighs in at 130 grams. In spite of having a larger display, the company has done a great job at making the phone thinner and light eight than last year's flagship. However, the phone still uses the same polycarbonate plastic material, but has a different dotted pattern on its back which makes it easy to grip and operate. On the whole, the phone looks quite stylish and elegant, but doesn’t offer anything new compared to its predecessor.
Display:
The Galaxy S4 sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla Glass3 protection. It supports multi-touch and packs in a resolution of 1080 X 1920 pixels for a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch. Just like its predecessor, the display is right up there with the best in terms of image quality and size. It has infinite contrast, rich colors and excellent outdoor visibility.
Camera:
The phone comes with a 13 megapixel back-facing camera which gives you the ability to capture still images up to a resolution of 4128 X 3096 pixels and record videos of 1080p at 30 frames per second. The rear camera has inbuilt image stabilization and LED flash for low-light conditions. The camera interface allows you to simultaneous record HD videos and capture still images without having to switch modes. Other features available in the camera app include touch focus, face detection, HDR mode, smile detection, geo-tagging, multiple scenes and shooting modes, etc. The front camera has a 2 megapixel sensor which supports 1080p video recording as well.
Hardware:
The Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature a Exynos 5 Octa core processor with a clock speed of 1.5GHz, PowerVR SGX 544 MP graphics and 2 GB of RAM. Internal memory will vary as the phone will be available in 3 variants - 16/32/64 GB, with an option to increase the memory capacity by up to 64 GB using a microSD card. Users will also receive a 50 GB Dropbox cloud storage account for 2 years. With this kind of processing power, the phone should have no trouble in handling all kinds of tasks without any trouble. The hardware is backed up by a removable standard Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 2600 mAh.
Software:
The device will run Android v4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface straight out of the box. In addition to the stock Android apps and features, Samsung will include its own set of features like S-voice natural language commands and dictation, Smart Stay eye tracking, Smart Rotate, Smart Pause, S-Health, S-Translator and much more. Most of these features are gesture-based and rely on the front-facing camera for tracking your movements.
Availability:
Samsung will launch the S4 at the end of April and the phone is expected to arrive in 155 countries through 327 network operators. However, we'll have to wait for sometime before the pricing details are announced.
